Cats are glorious creatures, full of mischief with each one of them boasting their own unique personalities. Sharing a home with one or more cats is so rewarding and there is nothing nicer than arriving home to be greeted with a smiley face and lots of purrs!
If you are just about to get a cat or maybe a cute little kitten, there's a lot to look forward to because these adorable characters will keep you amused and on your toes for hours. However, taking on the responsibility of owning a cat is not something to be taken lightly because your feline friend is going to depend on you - totally! It would be up to you to ensure the following:
Cats although independent by nature, adore being around people they love. Indoor cats especially enjoy interacting with their owners, but cats that are allowed to explore the great outdoors love a regular cuddle on the couch too! The difference being that an indoor cat needs to be kept more entertained than a cat that spends loads of time hunting down prey and doing what cats do when exploring and marking their territories. Kitten or Adult Cat? There is no doubt that all kittens are incredibly cute, but they can be little devils too! If you are very house proud and have gorgeous soft furnishings around your home, you need to be prepared for the fact kittens love to sharpen their claws on expensive fabrics and running up curtains! Litter training a kitten is not that hard, but until they learn the ropes, you have to expect a few "accidents". Telling a kitten off for not being clean is wrong because until they are taught to use a litter tray, it would not be fair to do so. Apart from this, kittens are sensitive little souls and they need to treated fairly and gently handled even when they get it wrong. A more mature feline would have already learnt all there is to know about sharing a home with people. This is one of the reasons many folk decide to offer a rescue cat a second chance by taking them into a loving new home. You would still need to go through the "getting to know your cat" stage, which for some felines is more difficult especially if they've had a harder start in life. Patience is everything whether you get a kitten or adopt an older cat. You need to give them all the time they need to settle in so they gradually adapt to your lifestyle - nothing will happen overnight. But it's the beginning of an amazing journey and one that will last for years to come as long as you take good care of your feline companion. Indoor or Outdoor? Many people believe that keeping a cat as an indoor pet is safer, but this really does depend on where you live. If your house is near a busy road or in town, letting your cat roam around outside can be a huge worry. The main concerns being your cat could end up being hit by a car or even stolen! However, if you live in the country and away from busy roads, there's nothing nicer than being able to let your cat out so they can be "cats". As a rule of thumb you would need to make sure your pet can get back in the house when they want to. It would be wrong to lock them out and if you do feel you have to do this, you need to make sure they can get into a garden shed or somewhere else where they feel safe and where they can take shelter from the weather should it turn nasty. There is nothing more pitiful than seeing a dripping wet cat sitting on a window ledge waiting for someone to let them back inside where it's warm and dry. Lastly, Sharing your home with a feline friend is very rewarding. Cats are wonderful creatures, full of personality and playfulness. Taking good care of your pet throughout their lives means making sure they have a safe place to live, good nutritious food in their bowls, lots of love and affection. When they are unwell, they need to be taken to the vet so they can be treated and made to feel better. In return for this, you will have a valued member of your family, albeit a furry feline four-legged one.
